The AA is the UK's biggest breakdown provider on most measures that matter: around 2,700 directly employed patrols attending 3.5 million breakdowns a year (both figures the AA's citations of its own and RAC's annual reports), and a 4.8/5 Trustpilot score across more than 246,000 reviews — exceptional at that scale. If you want the best odds of a genuine staff mechanic fixing your car at the roadside rather than a subcontractor towing it, this is the strongest case in the market.
It's also one of the most expensive ways to buy cover, and its worst reviews follow a consistent pattern: when the car can't be fixed at the kerb and a recovery truck is needed at a busy time, waits can stretch to hours and the job may pass to a third-party contractor. Shortlist the AA for its roadside strength — then read the complaints section below before deciding whether the premium is worth it for you.

Every AA policy starts with Roadside Assistance: help at the roadside, with unlimited callouts, when you break down more than a quarter of a mile from home. Three add-ons then do the heavy lifting. At Home covers breakdowns at your house or within that quarter-mile radius — where flat batteries most often strike. National Recovery matters more than people expect: without it, a car that can't be fixed at the roadside is towed to the AA's choice of local repairer or a local destination no further away; with it, you, your vehicle and up to seven passengers go to any single UK destination. Onward Travel adds a replacement car, alternative transport or overnight accommodation so the journey continues without the vehicle.
Two things the tick-boxes don't say. Repairs themselves are never free — garage bills after a tow are yours, unless you add Parts and Garage Cover, which only covers new faults arising after the first 14 days of the policy. And European breakdown cover is a separate product, giving access to a network of 60,000 local patrols and trucks across 40 countries with 24-hour English-speaking assistance.
Each bundle comes in four shapes: vehicle cover attached to a named car, van or bike; personal cover that follows you in any vehicle you drive or travel in; a joint policy for two people; and family cover for up to four people in the same household. The AA also sells business breakdown cover for cars, vans and larger fleet vehicles, and members get access to "Smart Benefits" discounts on dining, shopping and travel through the AA app — a nice-to-have, not a reason to buy.
On our checked prices (21 September 2026), AA vehicle cover starts at £85 a year for Roadside Assistance alone and the full personal bundle reaches £211.10. Treat the advertised "from £5.49 a month" with care: by the AA's own sales data (June–August 2026), only 10% of new customers achieved that price. Annual cover is a fixed 12-month policy and works out cheaper than 12 monthly payments; monthly cover is a continuous contract needing a minimum 30 days' notice to cancel.
Electric and hybrid vehicles are covered as standard, and the AA says over 98% of its patrols are trained to "Level 2 – Electric Vehicle Prepared". The app is genuinely useful: report a breakdown, share your exact location and track the patrol's progress live — the AA's own 2025/26 operational data found app reporting faster on average than phoning.
Ratings below are third-party review scores and provider-published expert ratings, shown with their source and the date we checked them. They are other people's experiences, not ours — and star ratings on their own hide the pattern, so we also summarise what recent reviewers praise and complain about.

Against the RAC, its only direct rival with an employed patrol fleet, the AA's case is scale: around 2,700 directly employed patrols versus 1,700, and 3.5 million breakdowns attended versus 2.4 million — figures from both firms' annual reports, though as cited by the AA rather than independently re-verified. Trustpilot tells a similar story at similar volume: 4.8/5 from 246,194 AA reviews against RAC's 4.6/5 from 215,615, with the RAC carrying a notably larger 1-star share (14% vs 6%). On price the two are broadly in line on our checked deals, and RAC advertises a price promise against the AA — so compare live prices on the day you buy.
Against the budget providers, the AA loses on price by a distance: on the same 21 September 2026 dataset, Rescuemycar.com starts at £16 a year, Emergency Assist at £19.32 and Start Rescue at £31.58, against the AA's £85 entry point. What you're paying the difference for is the patrol model — the budget names dispatch independent recovery contractors, while the AA usually sends its own mechanic (though it, too, uses third-party contractors at peak demand). If price is the priority, our tips for cheaper breakdown cover and the vehicle cover comparison are the places to start.
On expert ratings: the AA's top bundle (Roadside with National Recovery, At Home and Onward Travel) carries a Defaqto 5-star rating, and a What Car? December 2025 reliability survey scored the AA above RAC and Green Flag for arriving within an hour — but note both are as published by the AA on its own pages; we couldn't verify them at source, and Which? ratings sit behind a paywall so we make no claim about the AA's current Which? standing.
