The RAC is one of only two UK breakdown providers with its own employed patrol fleet: over 1,700 RAC mechanics nationwide, a claimed 4-out-of-5 roadside fix rate and more than 13.6 million members, with a 4.6/5 Trustpilot score across 215,615 reviews. When an RAC van turns up, reviewers are consistently warm — patrols get praised by name for quick, clearly explained fixes and for how they treat anxious or vulnerable drivers.
The record is less even than the headline score suggests: 14% of those reviews are 1-star, and the recent ones cluster around evening and overnight recovery waits, subcontracted tows that go wrong, and renewal quotes far above the new-customer price. The policy booklet itself says the RAC cannot guarantee how quickly it will reach you. A strong roadside operation, then — but read the complaints section below before you buy, and expect to haggle at renewal.

Every tier is built on 24/7 roadside assistance more than a quarter of a mile (in a straight line) from home, with fitting and labour free at the roadside. Basic is that roadside help plus a tow of up to 10 miles to a local garage when the fault can't be fixed at the kerb — and it caps you at 5 callouts a year. Extra adds the two upgrades most drivers actually need: At Home cover, so a patrol attends when the car won't start at home or within that quarter-mile radius, and national recovery, taking you, your passengers and your vehicle to any single UK destination — plus unlimited callouts. Complete adds Onward Travel, so a replacement car, alternative transport or overnight accommodation keeps the journey moving when the car can't.
Two wrinkles from our checked prices. Onward Travel can also be added to the cheaper tiers, and Extra plus that add-on covers the same four headline features as Complete for less (£170.50 against £181.50 a year on vehicle cover) — worth checking what else Complete bundles before paying the difference. And RAC's live line-up includes a Standard tier between Basic and Extra that we don't currently track, advertised from £8.99 a month on RAC's own site.
On our checked prices (21 September 2026), RAC vehicle cover starts at £77 a year for Basic and the full personal Complete bundle reaches £219.45 — see our guide to the difference between personal and vehicle cover if you're unsure which you need. RAC advertises lower from-prices (Basic from £5.29 a month on its site); as with any from-price, the quote for your car may land higher — our tracked Basic deal works out at £7 a month.
Electric and hybrid vehicles are covered, and the RAC's EV Boost vans can give a flat EV up to a 10-mile charge at the roadside. The app lets you report a breakdown, plan routes and get real-time traffic updates, and there's a 24/7 battery replacement service — delivery and fitting included, with a 10% member discount on the battery. European breakdown cover is a separate product, advertised for 48 countries. Behind the brand, cover is arranged by RAC Financial Services Limited and provided by RAC Motoring Services and/or RAC Insurance Ltd, all FCA-regulated — and the business has been owned by private equity and sovereign wealth investors since 2014, with no formal connection to the Royal Automobile Club in Pall Mall since 1999.
Ratings below are third-party review scores and provider-published expert ratings, shown with their source and the date we checked them. They are other people's experiences, not ours — and star ratings on their own hide the pattern, so we also summarise what recent reviewers praise and complain about.

Against the AA — the only rival running a larger employed patrol fleet, as our AA review sets out — the two sit close on customer scores at huge volume: RAC's 4.6/5 from 215,615 Trustpilot reviews against the AA's 4.8/5 from 246,194. The star splits differ more than the averages: 14% of RAC's reviews are 1-star against the AA's 6%. On price they're broadly in line on our 21 September 2026 checks — RAC's £77 entry point undercuts the AA's £85, while the AA's £211.10 top personal bundle comes in below RAC's £219.45 — and RAC advertises a price promise: cheaper than the AA on the same cover, or the difference beaten by 20% if you find it cheaper with the AA within 7 days, per its on-page terms. Compare live prices on the day you buy.
Against the budget providers, the RAC loses on price by a distance: on the same dataset, Rescuemycar.com starts at £16 a year, Emergency Assist at £19.32 and Start Rescue at £31.58, against the RAC's £77. The premium buys the employed-mechanic model — the budget names dispatch independent recovery contractors, while the RAC usually sends its own patrol. The catch is that the RAC, too, passes some longer recovery tows to third-party operators, and that handoff is where its worst recent reviews sit: staged relays, wrong vehicle details and drop-offs short of the paid-for destination. If price is the priority, start with our tips for cheaper breakdown cover and the vehicle cover comparison.
On expert ratings: the RAC publishes Defaqto 5-star badges for its top UK bundle (Roadside, Recovery & At Home with Onward Travel) and its European Comprehensive Plus policy — but Defaqto's public site doesn't list breakdown-category ratings, so both rest on RAC's own badges rather than anything we could cross-check. Which? scores sit behind a paywall, and we couldn't verify any named third-party award at source, so we make no claim beyond that. One thing we could verify on Trustpilot itself: the RAC replied to 96% of negative reviews there, typically within two weeks.
