Rescuemycar.com sells the cheapest breakdown cover we track — £16 a year for Local vehicle cover, the lowest price of any deal on this site (checked 21 September 2026) — and holds a 4.6/5 "Excellent" Trustpilot score across more than 28,000 reviews, with 90% at 4 or 5 stars. For a budget provider with no patrol fleet of its own, that's a genuinely strong record.
The catches are structural, not hidden: the headline Local tier tows you a maximum of 10 miles with no onward travel, assistance comes from independent contractors the policy says may or may not have mechanical training, and the most recurrent complaint by far is renewal quotes that double or triple the new-customer price. Buy it for the price — but read the 10-mile and renewal sections below first, because that's where the £16 headline earns its asterisks.

Everything is built from a Local base: roadside assistance with unlimited callouts, and recovery within 10 miles of the breakdown. That 10-mile cap is the tier's defining limit — there is no onward travel, and if the nearest garage or your home is further away, the extra miles are charged (one reviewer cited £120). Adding National Recovery is what gets you and the vehicle home or onward from anywhere in the UK, but only if it can't be repaired the same working day (or the next working day for out-of-hours breakdowns) — it's not an on-demand long-distance tow. Home cover handles breakdowns within a quarter of a mile of your address, which the Local tier otherwise treats as just another 10-mile-capped recovery. European cover bolts on top, with tight limits: trips of up to 31 days, 90 days abroad per policy year, vehicles under 16 years old at purchase, European motorway recovery reimbursed only up to £60, and no misfuelling cover abroad.
On our checked prices (21 September 2026), vehicle cover runs £16 for Local, £17.39 with National and £22.39 with National and Home — that middle step is the quiet bargain, turning a 10-mile tow into national recovery for £1.39. Personal cover, which follows you in any vehicle, costs £46 to £48.49 across the same tiers, and the European bundles are £86.12 and £101.62. Optional excess versions cut the premium further, with the excess payable only on a callout, and the provider's own average-purchase figures — £21 to £32 a year for UK memberships — sit close to what we see. Set against renewal complaints, treat these as first-year prices.
Rescuemycar.com is a trading name of NCI Consultants Ltd, set up in 2000 as an alternative to the big brands and now part of the FCA-regulated PIB Group; the policy is insurance underwritten by Wakam UK Limited — which, the policy wording itself discloses, holds no credit rating from a recognised agency. There's no in-house fleet: the policy defines your rescuer as "an independent recovery driver of our choosing" who may or may not have mechanical training. Eligibility is generous, though: cars, vans, motorbikes and motorised caravans up to 3.5 tonnes, 7m long and 2.55m wide, with no vehicle age limit on UK cover, attached caravans and trailers up to 7m recovered at no extra cost, EVs covered (a flat battery means a 10-mile tow on Local), and an SMS assistance line for deaf or hard-of-hearing drivers alongside the 24-hour UK call centre.

Against the other budget providers, Rescuemycar.com is simply the cheapest we track: £16 against Emergency Assist's £19.32, Eversure's £23.20 and Start Rescue's £31.58 on the same 21 September 2026 dataset — and even its featured Local + National + Home bundle at £22.39 undercuts most rivals' entry points. All of them share the same basic model of dispatching independent recovery contractors rather than employed patrols, so at this end of the market the comparison is mostly about limits and fees: Rescuemycar.com's 10-mile local cap, 1-hour labour limit and £40 first-24-hours surcharge are the ones to weigh. The vehicle cover comparison lines them all up.
Against the AA and RAC, the gap is the patrol model, and you're paying for it: their cover starts at £85 and £77 respectively — around five times Rescuemycar.com's entry price. The big two usually send their own staff mechanics, with a strong chance of a roadside fix; Rescuemycar.com's contractor may or may not have mechanical training, and the policy explicitly doesn't guarantee attendance times despite the 60-minute aim. Interestingly, Trustpilot barely separates them — Rescuemycar.com's 4.6/5 matches the RAC and sits just behind the AA's 4.8/5, albeit on a tenth of the review volume.
On expert ratings, tread carefully: the UK Breakdown Membership carries a Defaqto 5-star rating, but that's as published by the provider itself, with no rating year stated on the page, and we found no verifiable Which? assessment (none claimed by the provider either). If the plan is to start cheap and stay cheap, our tips for cheaper breakdown cover cover the renewal-day routine that recent reviewers say works here: phone with comparison quotes in hand before the auto-renewal lands.
